France to be hit by extreme cold and snow this weekend
The Weather Channel has reported that France is set to be hit by an extreme cold front, bringing heavy snow and blizzards to many areas.
Following an extremely warm Christmas period, France is bracing itself for a complete change of weather with plummeting temperatures and heavy snow. 2014 ended with high temperatures, making it the warmest year in France’s history since accurate weather records were kept, but that will all end this weekend.
This weekend will see much of France with a covering of snow, well beyond the normal areas such as the Alps and Pyrenees. Up to a metre of snow has been forecast in some areas with much more expected in high mountain resorts. Following the snow, a cold front will hit next week, dropping temperatures well below zero.
Even the south coast is not immune, with Marseille experiencing a rather chilly high of around -1C for most of next week.
The snow will be good news for skiers, with an early season heavy fall laying a good base for the rest of the season. Take a look at our Pyrenees ski resort snow forecast for more information.
