Midi-Pyrenees News : Clocks go back on Sunday morning

It is the end of Summer time on Sunday with the clocks going back by an hour and the evenings getting darker.

Daylight saving time was originally proposed by an Englishman, William Willett, who suggested that the clocks should increment by 20 minutes per month over a four month period in Spring and Summer, with the clocks being reset to Greenwich Mean Time in the Autumn.

Willetts original idea was rejected by parliament, but a revised DST was brought in by Act of Parliament in 1916 and remains the same today.  During World War Two, the clocks were advanced by two hours, giving double summer time.  Similar changes to the clocks have been made during fuel shortages.

Between October 1968 and October 1971 an experiment was conducted, with the whole of the UK remaining one hour ahead of GMT throughout the year.  The change was claimed to have reduced road accidents, but later analysis revealed that much of the claimed reduction was due to drink drive legislation introduced at the same time.

Since the 1980’s, all of western and central Europe have co-ordinated the change of their clocks.

The possibility of changing the way DST is used or scrapping the idea completely has often been raised.  What do you think?  Stick with just one time period?  Let us know.
