The motorway tolls across France were increased yesterday.  The increase is between 2 & 3 % across the autoroute network.  

The autoroute companies announced a spending of €166 Million last year on road improvements and for maintaining them. 

Unlike the UK there is no annual road tax in France, you pay for the use of motorways at the frequent péage (tolls).  You can pay by cash or bank/credit cards or if you are a frequent traveller you can purchase an automatic badge. 

With the automatic badge option you receive a special device that allows you to pass through the dedicated lanes without payment.  Payments are then automatically deducted from your bank account.  For more information on this service click here.
