The importance of travel insurance when skiing in the Pyrenees
The winter season is fast approaching with the snow beginning to fall in the higher resorts. Every year thousands of visitors come to the French Pyrenees to enjoy the snow conditions with an annual ski holiday. Skiing on the managed slopes is of course far safer than roaming off piste for a variety of reasons, however even on the groomed pistes accidents do happen.
To minimise the risk perhaps consider some of these points:-
- Always wear a ski helmet
- Never ski alone
- If skiing off-piste do so with a qualified, competent guide
- Ski slopes within your skiing ability
- Have a mobile phone with you to call for help if you get into trouble. The emergency mountain rescue number is 112
Many minor injuries may not even need treatment but when the accident is more serious, the cost of being rescued can escalate immensely. Do you know the cost of being rescued?
For a mountain rescue, you can expect to pay at least 1000 Euros and if you need to be taken to hospital by helicopter airlift, that is going to cost around 50 Euros a minute!
So consider this when you pack up your skis and head to the Pyrenees this winter. It is easy to get daily insurance when you buy your ski pass at any of the resorts in the Pyrenees. For under 3 Euros per day you can have total peace of mind if anything happens. Or you can buy it before you go.
If you travel more regularly then consider buying an annual insurance from one of the many travel insurance companies available but double check that winter sports are included and what limits are set with the policy.
Wishing our visitors a happy and safe holiday!
