Heatwave across south west France: Take precautions in Midi-Pyrenees

27 June 2011

Description:

Heatwave in South West France : Take Precautions in Midi-Pyrenees

This weekend saw the start of what could be record breaking temperatures covering the whole of the south west of France, including Midi-Pyrenees.  With temperatures expected to reach 40°c in some parts and roads to the coast & lakes bumper to bumper with people trying to get to the water’s edge, it’s surprising that a Level 2 Heatwave plan hasn’t been declared.

After the devastating loss of life during the 2003 heatwave in France (over 15,000) a new plan was put in place to prevent the same recurring.  This health plan is automatically set off on 1st June every year at Level 1.

Each department controls its own alerts in case of high temperatures.  In order for the alert to be raised to Level 2, temperatures must reach above 34°c for three consecutive days and 21°c during the night.  If it continues for longer, Level 3 is announced.

However, regardless of the level of alert, the fact remains that across the region it is incredibly hot and people should take the necessary precautions to keep safe during the heatwave.

Children, elderly and animals are all at greater risk during high temperatures.

Remember:

  • Enjoy the weather but try to stay cool.
  • Don't go outside between 11am and 3pm as this is the hottest part of the day.
  • Spend time in the shade and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Help others: check up on neighbours, relatives and friends who may be less able to look after themselves (for example, if they have mobility problems).
  • Drink water or fruit juice regularly (1.5l of water daily is advised)
  • Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, and if you do drink alcohol make sure you have lots of water or other non-alcoholic drinks as well.
  • Keep rooms cool by closing shutters during the day and open to air at night.
  • People with heart problems, breathing difficulties or serious illnesses may find their symptoms become worse in hot weather, so make sure you have enough medicines in stock and take extra care to keep cool.

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke

Heat exhaustion can happen to anyone in hot weather and if it isn't treated it can lead to heatstroke, which can be dangerous and even fatal.

If you or anyone else feels unwell, drink water and go somewhere cool to rest. If symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, dizziness, weakness or cramps get worse or don't go away, seek medical help.  See our Emergency numbers in France guide

Temperatures across Midi-Pyrenees

Temperatures at Guide2 Midi-Pyrenees towers were not too extreme, but still hit 33 degs in the shade on Sunday.  We are at the foot of the Pyrenees, so tend to stay a little cooler than the Lannemezan Plateau, for example, just a few kilometres north of us.  as I write this, it is nearly eleven o'clock and 25 degs.

Checking the forecast for Toulouse shows the next two days with temperatures in the low thirties and a dip in to the mid twenties until Friday when it again climbs to thirty degrees.

How did you escape the heat this weekend? By the pool, the ocean or a lake? In an air conditioned cinema or building? What temperatures did you record at what time of day and where were you in the region?
