Things to see and do in the Aveyron department of Midi-Pyrenees
Tweet
The Aveyron is a very large department in the north of the Midi-Pyrenees that is over two hundred kilometres long from north to south. It is a department that encompasses large plateaux and deep gorges, giving a widely varying landscape that is dotted with small villages.
There are many fantastic places to visit and exceptional walking routes both along the gorges and the 2500km2 Aubrac Plateau. During the winter, there are a number of ski resorts on the Aubrac Plateau giving the department an all year appeal.
- Millau Viaduct – You cannot come to the Aveyron and not go and marvel at the impressive structure and setting of the viaduct. Go to the visitor centre, but also take a drive under the viaduct in the deep valley.
- Grand Causses Natural Park – For walkers, the Grand Causses is an incredible area to escape from the hustle and bustle of life with great hiking routes.
- Conques – Now a World Heritage Site, the town was originally settled in the eighth century and retains the narrow cobbled streets and Abbey.
- Levezou Lakes – For a great family day out, head to Levezou Lakes. Formed by damming several rivers, the lakes now cover over 5000 hectares. The lakes offer water sports, and in the area there is horse riding, micro-lighting and great hiking.
- Rodez – The capital of the Aveyron department, Rodez has a lot to offer, with a great city to explore, plus museums and the Haras National Stud farm in the city centre.
- Belcastel – Listed by the Plus Beaux Villages de France, Belcastel is well worth a visit with its eleventh century chateau built high on the rocks above the village.
- Sauveterre-de-Rouergue – One of the most intact bastide towns in the south west of France, this small Aveyron village makes an excellent place to visit.
