Vic’s Big Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research UK is finally over!
Vic Heaney yesterday completed his epic walk across the length of France and most of England after seventy days on the road.
Vic had two main goals;
- To walk the 2000 kilometres from his home in Puivert, Aude, to arrive in Blackpool, his town of birth, in memory of his first wife who died of Pancreatic Cancer.
- To raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research UK charity.
Formulating the plan, Vic struck on the idea of walking the route in seventy days and reaching the house he used to live in on his seventieth birthday.
This he achieved today, 23 July 2010. Happy birthday Vic and congratulations on completing the trip.
Along the way, he has met many well wishers and charitable people who have either given a donation or paid for something, in which case he has put the value of the purchase into a collection tin. The goal was to raise £7000 and Vic is confident that with the collection tin money, plus donations that have been promised, the total has already been exceeded.
This is a fantastic achievement, but the charity always needs more, so Vic is keeping the Just Giving Page open for a little while longer. If you think you can help, then making an online donation is very easy and you can even claim money back from the government.
Over the seventy days, Vic has gone from freezing cold – it was snowing in the Pyrenees – to boiling hot and soaking wet. He has climbed the equivalent of several mountains and endured the aching muscles and sore feet of long distance walkers. Despite this, he has managed to keep his blog up to date virtually every day, only the lack of a signal preventing him from posting.
Before I finish this, I must remember to mention the person in the background that has made it all possible, Gay. Without Gay, Vic would have no where to sleep every night, he would have to cook his own meals, wash his own clothes, plan the routes, do the shopping – in fact everything! Without Gay, I think it is safe to say that Vic’s Big Walk would have fallen at the first hurdle! A magnificent team effort.
I am sure everyone reading this will join me in congratulating Vic and Gay on their achievement and wishing them all the best. Just the long walk back home now Vic!!
You can read of Vic’s journey and see the photographs on both Guide2MidiPyrenees and his blog. More importantly, if you can spare a small donation, then please go to his Just Giving Page.
