Gite holidays in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France
For many people, a holiday in France means staying in a gite, but what exactly is a gite?
Well, originally, a gite was just a very basic form of shelter and was usually just a converted outbuilding or barn close to the owners home. In fact to be called a gite, the owner should really live close by to greet the guests and offer help and advice.
These days, the standard of gites varies from the very basic to luxurious properties with swimming pools, jacuzzis and saunas, with every variation in between. Ther is something for everyone, with rural retreats to get the away from everything feel, to houses proviiding cooking and cleaning services to make your holiday extra special.
Gites de France has specified various grades of gite to try and give holiday makers some idea of what to expect. Take a look at our group on gites and chambres d’hotes for an explanation of the various types.
The Midi-Pyrenees has quite a range of gites, from complexes offering several gites or simply a single property let out to supplement the owner’s income.
Maison Tajan is a large gite just three kilometres from Les Agudes ski resort, making it a fantastic spot for winter holidays. If the snow is good, it is actually possible to ski back to the gites. During the summer it makes a fantastic base for walking in the Pyrenees, with numerous peaks and mountain lakes nearby.
For somewhere less remote how about a lovely town house apartment in the beautiful spa town of Bagneres de Luchon in the Haute-Garonne department. During the winter season it is a bustling ski resort with a cable car linking the town to the Superbagneres ski resort and in the summer, many people visit to take the “cures” in the sulphurous water of the spa. If neither of these activities appeals, it is also a fantastic place to sit at a pavement café and watch the world go by.
We have a great selection of holiday properties on Guide2MidiPyrenees, just ideal for your next holiday in this varied and fantastic region.
