French and Midi-Pyrenees news in briefThe end of June, beginning of July sees a number of events take place annually across France
French sales start today
The annual French summer sales start today, 30th June and continue until 3rd August. Some departments, none of which are in the Midi-Pyrenees region, start a week later on 7th July.
To us Brits that see sales every day of the week in the UK, it may come as a surprise that the sale season is strictly controlled in France, but if you are a keen bargain hunter, it makes sense to take a note of these dates.
French school holidays start this week
French schools break up at the end of this week and re-open on 2nd September
French holiday season begins
Another French phenomenon, closely tied in to the school holidays, is the way that France seems to come to a halt during July and August! Many factories will close for a whole month and in big cities like Toulouse and Paris, the population move out to the coast for a large part of the summer period.
For the tourist, you will find that many attractions in the big cities are closed or have restricted opening hours as all the employees are on holiday themselves.
The other thing to note is the increased traffic. Where France is usually re-known for its quiet roads, traffic and stress free, during the holidays many roads are more like the M25!!
