Description:
France wide day of strikes planned for Thursday 24 June
The strike is in protest against the changes to the state pensions in France, particularly the raising of the retirement age to sixty two.
The CGT, Unsa, CFDT, FSU, Solidaires and CFTC unions are asking all of their members to strike and joins in street protests.
The CGT website has a map of planned demonstrations and it is likely that the cities and towns involved will see major disruption if the unions see the support they expect.
From the government’s point of view, the changes are unavoidable and necessary for state pensions to remain affordable. A similar change in the rules has been brought in to the UK state pension and my own pension age is now 67 in the UK.
Expect this dispute to continue for many months and years, with continued demonstrations and protests. In the end, I think the changes will be forced through as the current situation is unaffordable, but it is going to be quite a battle.
