Charity event in aid of Help for Heroes and Anzac biscuits.

A charity cake sale was held at Kingdom Vegetal Garden Centre in Boulogne-sur-Gesse, Haute-Garonne on Saturday 13 March 2010 in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.

There were two ways of supporting the event, either bake something for the stand to sell or if your cooking skills are not up to it, go along and buy something.

The event was organised by Jill and Ken Digger, with the assistance of Gary and Nikki McArthur, who are the proprietors of Kingdom Vegetal and gave them space in the centre of their shop to hold the sale.

I thought I was arriving reasonably early at 1030, but Jill reported doing a roaring trade and in danger of running out of things to sell.  Luckily, reinforcements arrived with more delicious cakes and biscuits.

I was on the hunt for a carrot cake, but unfortunately they had already all sold, so I settled on Anzac biscuits, which I chose because I had never heard of them.  Apparently they are the national biscuit of Australia and have their own entry in Wikipedia! 

Anzac stands for Australia, New Zealand Army Corps and it is believed the biscuits were first produced during the First World War by Army wives to give their loved ones something tastier than Army rations.  Amazing what you can learn by going to a cake sale and rather a nice connection to the Help for Heroes charity I think.

The sale raised a fantastic 336€ for Help for Heroes.  Congratulations to Jill and Ken for making such an effort for a very worthy charity and thanks to Gary for providing the location.
