Winter adventure holidays in the Pyrenees Mountains of the Midi-Pyrenees.

Most sports enthusiasts coming to the Pyrenees Mountains during the winter are here to enjoy the skiing, snow-shoeing or maybe some winter rock climbing offered by the ski resorts.  The conditions for this at the moment are truly fantastic, with fresh snowfalls over much of the Pyrenees.

However, there are some alternatives for the more adventurous.

Have you ever considered being towed by a horse while on skis?  No, nor had I, but that is what is on offer at the small resort of Hautacam in the Hautes-Pyrenees.  Its called Ski Joering and is a growing activity as resorts diversify to attract visitors.

At Hautacam, you can have a practice in an enclosed ring and once confident, venture out on to a closed, groomed initiation trail.  Fifteen minutes in the initiation ring costs 8€ and may be enough to say that you have tried it!  If you have got the bug, a forty-five minute hike while cost you just 14€ per person.

For something a little more daring, how about ice-diving?  The thought of cutting a hole in the ice, putting on a dry suit and jumping in does not initially appeal, but for thrill seekers, it has got to be quite high on the list of things to do .

Taking the plunge at Piau-Engaly ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrenees, you are in a roped of area in the middle of the resort, with skiers and boarders gliding past.  It is an unforgettable experience.

Piau-Engaly also offers ice climbing, with beautiful climbs that are suitable for beginners and will give a great introduction to the sport.
