Description:
Ski holidays in the Midi-Pyrenees region of South West France.
The ski resorts in the Pyrenees Mountains of the Midi-Pyrenees region have benefited this year from some great snowfall of late.
The early season had a mixed start, with some heavy snow towards the end of November, which had the resorts talking of early opening and a bumper season. This quickly turned to a more realistic outlook as December brought the return of warm weather and the disappearance of much of the early snow.
Mid December onwards saw temperatures falling to more normal levels and a return of the snow. Now, the ski resorts have a good base snowpack to build on and the past few days have seen small but regular snow falls to keep the skiing conditions excellent.
The main resorts of Saint Lary Soulan, Luchon-SuperBagneres, Piau-Engaly Peyragudes Ax Les Thermes and Domaine du Tourmalet all have good coverage with the majority of runs open.
Piau-Engaly, Peyragudes, St Lary Soulan and Gavarnie/Gedre are expecting up to 30cm of snow over the next three days with 25cm forecast to fall on Sunday. Other resorts are likely to receive similar amounts so this weekend and next weeks powder skiing should be great.
Recently, the heavy snow has caused a significant avalanche risk and skiers are being asked to take extreme care if venturing off-piste. In Ax les Themes, a number of skiers have had their ski passes confiscated as they caused an avalanche by skiing off-piste without taking care. Several people have lost their lives this season and the resorts are coming down hard on in-considerate skiers.
With cheap flights to Toulouse, Pau and Tarbes-Lourdes, it is possible to come to the Pyrenees Mountains for just a weekend to make the most of the excellent conditions. For flight information have a look at our scheduled flights page.
