Irish rugby star ties the knot in Auch, south west France
Paul O’Connell, the Irish and Munster rugby star, married his long term partner Emily O’Leary in a ceremony held in Sainte Marie Cathedral in Auch.
The small Gascony town saw almost two hundred guests witness the marriage ceremony, performed by O’Connell’s uncle Fr Dan O’Connell, a priest now based in the United States of America. Along with the invited guests, the area outside the cathedral was busy with rugby fans and others wondering what all the fuss was about! Stars of the rugby world were in attendance, including many of Mr O’Connell’s team mates from Munster and Ireland.
The cathedral at Auch is beautiful inside with many stained glass windows, a carved wooden choir stall and magnificent organ. The area has been listed as part of the UNESCO Worldwide Cultural Heritage sites on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostella. And is most definitely worth a visit next time you are in Gascony.
