Description:
Foix, in the Ariege department of south west France is notable for its dominant fortified chateau, perched high above the city on a rocky hillock.
Geography
Foix is a small city situated midway between Toulouse and Andorra in the department of Ariege, of which it is the capital. Ariege is one of the least populated departments in France and the surrounding countryside is unspoilt and beautiful.
Tourism
The biggest attraction to the city is the imposing chateau of Foix that dates back to the 10th century and is visible from all directions. It is perched high above the city on a rocky crag and gives beautiful views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The chateau also contains a museum which uncovers the history of Foix, the chateau and the department of Ariege. The city also has an interesting old quarter with many colombage houses and is a pleasant place to while away a few hours. The Forges des Pyrene is just 2 minutes from Foix and is an insight into the traditional skills of the area.
The scenery around the city is spectacular and being in the midst of the Cathar country, there are many chateau and castles to visit and discover the history of the Cathars persecution.
Being in the mountains, it is within about 40 minutes of winter sport locations and during the summer months walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers take advantage of the clear air and quiet roads. A particular walking route of interest is the Chemin de Liberte, which was opened in 1994 and follows one of the then secret routes followed by downed airmen and escaping Frenchmen during the Second World War.
The City’s location makes an excellent base for exploring the area. The Mediterranean Sea is easily reachable, with Perpignan being only a two hour drive away along the picturesque D117. Andorra is just over an hour away and although there is not much to go and look at, the scenery is beautiful and of course the tax free shopping is useful.
Economy
The traditional industry of the area is textiles, metal-working and mining along with agriculture. Tourism is now playing an ever greater role, though manufacturing still plays a large role in the economy, evident through the large investment made by Continental in the area. Agriculture is understandably a large provider of employment in the area.
Transport
The easiest and most convenient transport is by car, since public transport away from large built up areas is virtually non-existent. By flying into Toulouse and hiring a car, you can be in Foix in less than two hours and easily explore the area.
There is a train station in the city, but once here getting around the department will be tiresome without a car.
The tourist office website (French) can provide more information on the city.
