Description:
Monkey Forest in Rocamadour, Lot
Foret des Singes in Rocamadour is an educational animal park and a monkey research centre studying the behaviours and social life of Barbary Macaques.
Opened in 1974, the park aims to raise public awareness of the monkeys and assist in conservation programs. One hundred and thirty monkeys are allowed to roam freely within the confines of the 20 ha park and amongst the visitors if they wish.
The monkeys are very friendly and will not hesitate in coming up to you and grabing the popcorn distributed at the entrance.
A series of forest paths have been laid out for the visitors to wander and mix with the monkeys, allowing plenty of space for the monkeys to escape unwanted attention. The park is an educational site with thousands of school children learning about the Macaques every year and interacting with them.
The park plays an important role in the conservation of the Macaques, by educating and informing people. The park also participates in reintroduction programs, putting whole communities of monkeys back in to their natural habitat.
During the summer months, the park is open all day everyday, but times in Spring and Autumn vary, so please check with the park. The park is closed during the winter period from November to April.
