Description:
Montsegur is small commune in the Ariege department of south west France, that is famous for the chateau perched on a 1207 metre "pog", high above the village.
Geography
The village is located 12 Km south of Lavelanet and 33 km south east of Foix, in the heart of the eastern end of the Pyrenees Mountains. The earliest signs of settlement in the area date back to the stone age, about 80,000 years ago and the village has had a chateau since the 13th century.
Tourism
The main attraction of Montsegur is to visit the chateau situated above the village, for which entrance is 4.50€ for adults. Please see our separate page for a full description of the chateau.
There is a one room museum in the village which displays a small number of artefacts from the original village that was built around the walls of the chateau. Entrance is free.
There are a small number of shops selling local produce, arts, crafts and gifts. The available accommodation is quite limited and it is advisable to book well in advance.
Transport
The closest airport is Carcassonne in the Aude department, at 75 Km, but there is not an autoroute linking the two. Toulouse-Blagnac is 128 Km distant, but takes a similar time to drive to thanks to the A66 autoroute. Perpignan is also relatively close, being 116 Km to the east, but is the furthest away in terms of time due to the lack of an autoroute.
The nearest train station is at Foix and the nearest TGV stop is at Carcassonne.
