Description:
The Pic du Midi de Bigorre, standing at 2,877 m, is not the highest mountain in the French Pyrenees, but has the distinction of being topped by an astronomical observatory. The observatory was constructed in 1908 after 30 years work and until relatively recently was the preserve of scientists. Now the site is open to the public and is one of not to miss attractions of the Midi-Pyrenees.
Accessing the site involves two cable car journeys, taking around 15 minutes and climbing 1000 m above the ski resort of La Mongie. Once there, take time to appreciate the spectacular views from the 750 sq m viewing platform before exploring the displays and information.
The site now offers evening dinner trips and overnight visits including dinner and during the winter there is a ski route down to La Mongie, but a guide is highly recommended.
