Description:
Saint Mont wine appellation, Gers
Saint Mont is a small village in the Gers department of the Midi-Pyrenees, close to the border with the Landes department of the Aquitaine region.
Tha Saint Mont Appellation is a small wine growing area around the village and until January this year, the wines were produced under the VDQS (vin de qualité supérieure) designation, which was created in 1981.
On 14 January 2011. it was confirmed that Saint Mont had been upgraded to the highest grading, in wine terms, that of the AOC label (appellation d'origine contrôlée). It has been a thirty year labour of love by the growers in the region to finally achieve AOC status.
The vineyards cover an area of around 785 hectares and red, rosé and white wines are produced.
- For red and rosé wine: Tannat, Fer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
- For white wine: Arrufiac, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Courbu, Clairette.
There are many vineyards in the area and simply driving around you will some offering “degustation” – wine tasting. The tourist office at nearby Riscle will be able to help you find vineyards offering tasting and tours, or take a look at the Vins de Sant Mont website.
