Marshal Foch birthplace museum in Tarbes
The birthplace of Marshall Ferdinand Foch is now a museum illustraing his life and career. Born in 1851, he joined the Army after completeing his schooling and was a career military man.
He played a critical part in the defeat of Germany during the First World War and attended the armistice talks. He wanted terms agreed that would prevent Germany from ever being a threat in Europe again. After the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, he commented that "This is not a peace. It is an armistice for 20 years". How true his words were.
He is commemerated in many French towns and there is also a statue of him near Victoria railway station in London.
July-Aug: 1hr guided tours daily except Tue, 9am-noon, 2-6.30pm;
Jun and Sep: daily except Tue, 2nd and 4th Sun of the month, 9am-noon, 2-6.30pm;
Jan-May and Oct-Dec: daily except Tue, 2nd and 4th Sun of the month, 9am-noon, 2-5pm. Closed some Weds (contact for information), 1 Jan, 1 May, 1 Nov, 25 Dec.
