Description:
Place du Capitole, Toulouse
The Place du Capitol is Toulouse's largest square and covers around two hectares. It is the centre for many events in the city and holds a number of markets. It is also to the impressive Capitole building, with its attractive façade of eight pink marble columns, completed in 1760.
The square is lined on three sides with cafes and restaurants, each giving a lovely view of the former Grand Palace that is now the centre of administration in Toulouse. The Capitole also houses the Theatre National du Capitole and a number of galleries featuring works from local artists displayed in the Jean-Paul Laurens, Henri Martin and Paul Gervais Rooms
An all day open air market covers the square on Wednesdays, while the Tuesday and Saturday morning markets feature organic foods.
Some of the most popular cafes in Toulouse are located in the square, such as Grand Café de l'Opéra, Le Florida, Le Bibent and Mon Café. It is a good spot for people watching and planning your days visits or simply siting in the sun with the locals and the students.
There is an underground car park beneath the square making it a very convenient spot to begin exploring Toulouse.
