Description:

The Midi Pyrenees has some excellent snow sport facilities, of which the majority are in the Pyrenees mountains.  They are generally quieter and cheaper than the Alps and the Midi Pyrenees region has 23 of the 38 French Pyrenees wintersports resorts.  A small number of resorts are in the L'Aubrac, an area in the very north of the Midi Pyrenees region and they are described in a seperate listing.

Both downhill and cross country skiing are well catered for along with snowboarding and there are plenty of other activities on offer from Luge and snow-shoeing to paragliding.  Some resorts offer an introduction to Ski-joering, which is best described as being like water-skiing, but on snow being towed by a horse!  If nothing else it would make an interesting break from tearing down the slopes.

Many of the resorts are small and family oriented, with children normally well catered for.  In addition, many resorts have now joined forces so that a single lift pass allows access to a number of different ski areas. 

The largest resort is La Domaine du Tourmalet, which joins the ski areas of La Mongie and Bareges by ski lift.  Here you will find the longest continuous marked run in Europe, a mix of green and blue pistes from the Col du Tourmalet down to the village of Bareges.
