Description:
Snowshoeing (Racquettes) in the Pyrenees mountains.
What is Snowshoeing?
Basically, snowshoeing is hiking / walking in snow. If you have ever walked in deep snow before, you will know how difficult it can be. In normal walking boots, snow deeper than a few inches soon becomes hard work and as soon as you come across a gradient you will be sitting down more often than anticipated!
To overcome these limitations, snowshoes can be used. Shaped a little like tennis rackets, they spread the wearer's weight allowing them to walk on the surface of the snow instead of sinking into it. In addition, they are equipped with spikes that provide grip on icy and steep terrain.
Who can snowshoe?
As long as you can walk, anybody can snowshoe. There are marked trails for all levels of fitness and ability allowing just about anyone to get out and enjoy the snow.
What equipment is required?
Normal walking equipment is ideal, so if you already have comfortable, waterproof walking boots and clothing, then the only extra equipment is the snowshoes and ski poles with large snow baskets. Hiking clothing is worn in layers, allowing you to adapt you warmth to the conditions.
Other equipment needs depend on where and with whom you are snowshoeing. If you join an organised group, the group organiser should tell you exactly what is required.
If snowshoeing independently, then the usual hiking equipment is required:
- Map
- Compass
- Water
- Food
- First-aid kit
- Head torch
- Spare hat and gloves
Safety
The mountains and snow add an extra danger, so it is essential to know about the snow conditions in the area you intend to go to and the avalanche risk. The following avalanche equipment is essential and you must know how to use it:
- Avalanche transceiver
- Snow probe and shovel
It is also important to let someone know where you are going and your planned route and times, particularly if you intend to get off the beaten track.
Where to snow shoe in the Midi-Pyrenees
Anywhere there is snow, you can snowshoe. However, depending on you level of fitness and your sense of adventure, there are wide choices available. For beginners, it is worth joining an organised group at first to help you with snowshoe choice and to pick up hints and tips.
After this, using ski resorts as a base is useful as the ski lifts will enable you to avoid a lot of climbing at first. As you become more experienced and adventurous, almost anywhere is accessible with the right equipment.
