Key points about this information item Blood donation in France and Midi-PyreneesInformation Description:
The French Blood Donor service in the Midi-Pyrenees
The Etablissement Français du Sang is the sole blood transfusion service in France and is responsible for the safety of the blood donation chain, from donor to recipient.
There are one hundred and fifty three fixed donation sites, plus a fleet of mobile donation facilities.
Blood is an essential part of the body and cannot be replaced with anything else, which is why donations are so important. Blood is composed of red blood cells, plasma, platelets and white blood cells.
The service takes all types of blood donation:
- Whole blood
- Platelets – very small cells
Fixed sites are equipped with machines that can take whole blood, platelets or plasma, but mobile units may only be able to take whole blood. Men can donate up to six times per year, whereas women can only donate four times per year.
Within the Midi-Pyrenees, there are eight fixed sites for donating blood;
- Rodez, Aveyron
- Auch, Gers
- Tarbes, Hautes-Pyrenees
- Toulouse, Haute-Garonne
- Cahors, Lot
- Albi, Tarn
- Castres, Tarn
- Montauban, Tarn-et-Garonne
The location of Midi-Pyrenees blood donor sites can be found on the EFS website.
The service also runs regular mobile blood collections, making sonations even easier.
Important Note :
Due to the risk of transmitting bovine spongiform encephalopathy or "mad cow's disease", blood donation is prohibited for people who have lived in Great Britain for over 12 accumulative months between 1980 and 1996.
