Geography
Fources is located in the north western corner of the Gers on the border with Landes around 12 km west of Condom. It is a small bastide town notable for its round central "square" situated in a loop of the Auzoue River.
Tourism
The main reason to visit Fources is to admire the medieval architecture, the half timbered houses and the arcades. It is a member of the Plus Beaux Villages des France accossiation and it is easy to see why. The central "square" used to be occupied by a castle, but this was demolished long ago and it is now a pretty and pleasant, tree-shaded green.
Parts of the fortifications still remain and in particular the west gate, Tour de l'Horlage that overlooks the river. There is also a chateau on the river banks dating from the 15th century, which is today a restaurant and hotel.
During the summer, numerous brocantes, markets and recitals take place in the village along with a number of shops selling antiques and local produce.
Economy
The economy of the area is based around agriculture, but Fources, being such a small village now relies on its tourist visitors to boost the income.
Transport
The Gers is an area of small villages with very little public transport and Fources is no exception. The nearest train station is Condom, some 12 km to the east and to get to Fources from there is easiest by taxi.
The easiest way to see the area is by car, as the roads are generally quiet, traffic free and well maintained. From Condom, D114 will take you directly to Fources, but taking the D16 will lead you to another bastide of Montreal and from there take the D29 north to Fources.
Flying to the region is easy with Toulouse International airport just one and a half hours to the east. Have a look at our travel pages for more information.
