Grottes de Betharram, near Lourdes, Hautes-Pyrenees, Midi-Pyrenees
TweetWe visited the Grottes de Bethrram yesterday with friends that are visiting. The caves are very impressive, with fantastic formations carved out by the river as it worked its way through the rock.
The first part of the tour is a guided walk through various chambers and down 300 steps, descending 80 metres through a great chasm carved out by the river as it heads downwards.
More chambers follow and then you walk just above the river through a very narrow gorge that has been carved out.
Following a short trip across a lake, there is a 5 minute train ride to emerge at the end of the trip in the gift shop and cafe area.
We had our friends 6 year old girl with us and it was clear she was getting bored with the first part, but the ride on the boat and train soon changed that and I she enjoyed the day out.
Highly recommended if you enjoy exploring our natural world and discovering how it is formed.
One piece of advice, definitely avoid August! We went on the last weekend of August when most people had completed their holidays and gone home, but judging by the large crowd control and queueing systems in place, I imagine that it gets very busy. Particularly with coach trips.
I have put an information page on the website.
