Burqa may be banned in France today
France set for Burqa banThe lower house is today voting on the Burqa ban in France. Muslim groups are already claiming it is racist and it raises the spectre of more unrest across the country.
Whether you like the burqha or not, is it right that the govrnment should dictate what is allowable to wear or not? The law has been worded to not target a particular group or religion and just says that clothes should not completely cover a persons face.
How about banning hoodies? There are kids that walk the streets of UK wearing hoodies and masks and I am sure the same happens on the streets of Paris and other big cities in France. Surely they are more of a threat.
Human rights groups say that women should not be forced to wear it, but then should they be arrested if they want to wear it? The law should make the forcing of women to wear the Burqa illegal, but that is probably impossible to enforce.
Giving freedom of choice should be the aim of governments, not stamping on peoples rights.
I agree that somehow, women that are forced to wear the burqa should be able to choose not to wear it, but I don't think a ban is the right approach.
